Secondhand Smoke is Bad for Your Pet

Most people know that secondhand smoke is bad for children or other adults nearby. In fact, the Center for Disease Control estimates that since 1964, nearly 2.5 million nonsmokers have died from health problems aggravated or caused by secondhand smoke. Those are staggering statistics that are hard for many smokers to face when they consider the health of their family or friends. But did you know that secondhand smoke is bad for your beloved pet as well?

What Counts as Secondhand Smoke

Before you can understand how secondhand smoke harms your pets, it’s important to understand what counts as secondhand smoke. Any smoke that comes from a tobacco product, such as cigarettes, pipes, or cigars counts. This include smoke that has been exhaled by a smoker.

Every cigarette creates more than 7,000 chemicals when it is burned, and about 70 of those are known to cause cancer. Many more are toxins that can affect health in other ways. Ammonia, arsenic, carbon monoxide, lead, methanol, and even formaldehyde are all toxins that are released when a cigarette burns.

Smoke in the environment can stay on fur and skin long after the smell has left the air. Animal fur is very absorbent, meaning that secondhand smoke can linger around their breathing space for days after being exposed.

Secondhand Smoke and Cats

Secondhand smoke is particularly dangerous for cats for one major reason: the way they groom. As cats clean themselves, they’ll lick and ingest any secondhand smoke lingering on their fur, which can lead to mouth cancer and lymph nodes. Remember that our pets are much smaller than we are; it takes a significantly lower amount of the toxins in cigarettes to affect them the way a lifetime of smoking would us.

One study showed that cats owned by one-pack-per-day smokers are more than three times as likely to develop lymphoma than a cat living in a nonsmoking home. And another found that any cat who is exposed to even a single cigarette every day is four times as likely to develop one of the most common types of oral cancers in cats.

Secondhand Smoke and Dogs

Dogs can also develop cancers of various sorts when exposed to secondhand smoke, as well as respiratory diseases like asthma and bronchitis. Studies have shown that dogs with long muzzles have a 250% higher chance of developing cancer in their nasal passages when they live with smokers than with nonsmokers. And dogs with short muzzles, like bulldogs, are more likely to develop lung cancer. Short-muzzled dogs are already at a higher risk for asthma and breathing problems; living with smokers makes it nearly impossible for these dogs to avoid developing issues.

How to Fix it

While some pet owners may think that simply smoking outside, or only in the car, is an easy way to solve this issue, that is not entirely true. Smoke travels on clothing, in hair, and in through windows and doors. When your pets cuddle or brush against you, their fur will pick up at least five to seven times as much environmental smoke residue as pets owned by nonsmokers. Vaping also isn’t an easy solution. The chemicals in many vape solutions is made up of chemicals with similar properties to ingredients in antifreeze, which can be deadly to pets when licked or ingested.

In fact, the only real way to save your pet’s life from the deadly side effects of secondhand smoke is to not expose them to it in the first place. The best option for both of you is to quit smoking altogether; don’t allow friends or family to smoke in your home; and avoid areas where smoking is allowed.

Pet Friendly Vacation Spots

So, you want to go on vacation with your pet? That’s great – we don’t really much like people don’t want to leave your dog at home. However, you know that not all vacation spots are pet-friendly, so, where are you and your dog going to go on vacation?

Sonoma Valley, California

You will begin on the west coast of California, with its lovely vineyards. There are over 50 wineries in Sonoma, and they are almost all dog friendly. You can sample the harvests while wandering about with your dog. At the end of the day, you can visit any of a number of restaurants where dogs are welcome. They can sit next to your table, or even choose from their own menu.

Fort Collins, Colorado

The big attraction in Fort Collins is the huge number of breweries. You can sample local craft beers, and relax on patios where our dog will be welcome. At most breweries, you can even bring your furry friend inside the tasting rooms. Remember, though, it’s a very bad idea to allow a dog to consume alcohol.

Austin, Texas

There’s no such thing as a Texan who doesn’t love dogs. That means that in Austin, you and your best buddy can go wherever you like. You do have to behave yourselves, though. If your dog promises that you will behave, you can enjoy all the sights and sounds of this glorious city.

Chatanooga, Tennessee

Can you afford to board the Chattanooga ChooChoo? Sorry, we just couldn’t resist. Seriously, Chattanooga offers so much for you and your dog, including the Chickamauga Creek Pocket Wilderness trail. It’s a full 10 miles, but don’t worry about getting too warm – you can always take a dip in the creek, you and your dog together.

Pet Subscription Box Craze

Fruit-of-the-month subscriptions used to make for great party joke fodder, but when it comes to pampering our pets, it seems that monthly goody deliveries are no laughing matter. The canine treat box delivery business has taken off in a way no one probably ever imagined possible, bringing health products, toys, and doggy treats right to your door each and every month. If you’ve considered ordering up a monthly stash of fun and tasty specialties for your pooch, we’ve got a look at the big three contenders in the arena.

BarkBox

barbox1This popular service is now practically a household name, despite being just four years old (that’s just an infant in dog years!). BarkBox has enjoyed crazy-high sales just a few years in, and for good reason. Not only do they deliver high-end products with free shipping, but they also donate 10% of their proceeds to animal rescues.

In a given month you will receive a box with 4-6 full-size items including things like a bag of high quality dog treats and fun stuff like a rope toy. You can choose from 1 to 12 month subscriptions ranging from about $20-30 per month depending on the plan you choose (they’re cheaper the longer you sign up for).

Some consider the price a little steep but the entire process is smooth – from the availability of an app, to the user-friendly interface of the website, plus tracking of your shipments. They offer multi-dog discounts but you will have to purposely cancel if desired, and no cat option is available.

PawPack

PawpackThey are geared more toward natural, eco-friendly doggy delights. PawPack is so confident you’ll like their products that they offer an allergy guarantee – if your dog has an allergic reaction to anything in his box, they send you a treat at no charge. As with BarkBox, your pooch will get 4+ premium products, plus some samples and discounts for their partner companies.

How much will PawPack set you back? A little more than BarkBox – $25-35/month depending upon which length of time you choose – 1, 6, or 12 months. But, they have stellar customer care, above average quality toys, and cat options are available. And again, like BB, they donate 10% of their sales to animal charities.

Surprise My Pet

>Surprise My PetThis newcomer, while times are still early (they launched at the beginning of 2015) is still a standout among the competition. One major reason for that fact is that they offer a “paw for paw guarantee” – this means if your dog doesn’t want to play with one of their toys or eat one of their treats, they’ll send you a free replacement.

Another thing that sets SMP apart is that they put 5-7 full-sized items into their boxes, as opposed to the competition’s 4-6. They also offer both cat and extra-small dog options, and their boxes are packed to the brim. On the downside there’s no customer care by phone. But it’s a wait and see with this brand-new company.

PoochPerks

Pooch PerksAnother shiny new up-and-comer to watch for is PoochPerks. They are a Miami, FL based company started by two pet moms who focus on all-natural treats and made in the USA products. The prices are steeper than the other main contenders, however – for a large dog it’s $20/month for a two to three item box, and $50/month for a six item box – with two more choices in between. The four size options are a twist that may end up as a lucrative niche, but time will tell.

One certainty is that for those who want to easily stock their dog’s treat cupboard and save some time perusing toys down at the pet store, life just got a whole lot more convenient!

Pets Reduce Our Stress Level

Since we’re all animal lovers here, we know that our pets reduce our stress level. When is the last time you came home and weren’t excited to see that adorable furry face greeting you (or just looking up if you have a cat…hahahaha).

All of us need unconditional love.  We know that babies who don’t receive love will experience a syndrome called “failure to thrive.” This lack of love actually causes arrested development preventing these babies from growing physically, emotionally, and intellectually. Love is what nourishes us, and enables us to grow and thrive.  In fact, children receiving no love have actually been known to not survive.

Pets are the Opposite of Stress

Who in our lives can love us no matter how crabby we are, or how miserably we wake up in the morning, or on those days when we don’t want to get dressed, comb our hair, or even talk to another living soul?  We can always count on our BFF (Best Furry Friend) to take away the blues.  We know that pets are a constant source of unconditional love.

Pets = Love, Not Stress

Our pets ask nothing in return from us, other than being allowed to love us. They are little beings that affect us energetically because we are able to make a heart to heart connection. You can actually feel this energy if you try the following exercise:

  • Close your eyes
  • Take three deep breaths – breath in, hold it, breathe out slowly
  • Clear your mind by focusing on your breathing. Do this for approximately 2 minutes
  • Now allow yourself to picture your favorite pet
  • Picture your pet (either actual or imagined) cuddled up on your lap as you both go into a deep relaxation
  • Stay with that image for another two minutes
  • Slowly open your eyes

What did you feel? Where did you feel it? Most people report that they feel warm and relaxed. They actually feel something in their heart area – an opening, a warming, a good sense of well-being.  They feel this even if they only imagine having a pet. And this exercise merely took less than 5 minutes.

Pets and Health Benefits

The medical community has actually come to realize the benefit of having pets. Studies support that having a pet can reduce blood pressure, improve heart rhythms, alleviate depression, and much more. Pets provide company for people living alone. They are good companions – even the most aloof cat is willing to interact with us (on their terms of course).

Pets and Emotional Benefits

When you have a pet there’s a good chance that you’ll have at least one good laugh a day which is another powerful stress reducer. Tears of laughter and joy have been found to exhibit the same toxins as crying from sadness and sorrow. In fact, our facial muscles contort in the same way when when’re laughing as when we’re crying. The sounds we make are similar, and both generate a cathartic cleansing. We might feel drained after a good laugh or a good cry, but we will indeed feel better afterwards. The one difference is that crying focuses us inward, and laughing brings us out of ourselves and opens us to the world.

If you lead a sedentary lifestyle and you’re tired of being tired, then maybe it’s time to get a dog. Not only will you be responsible for another living being, which will give you a positive focus outside of yourself, but you will also have the opportunity to get off the couch and exercise every day. Even if you’re not the walking type, you might have fun just throwing a ball and playing catch which is good for your physical, as well as your mental health.

A pet can certainly alleviate stress and reduce any depression you may be experiencing.  In addition to companionship, increasing your physical activity, and keeping you healthy, you will have a constant source of love and that’s something to wag your tail at.
